The Shotokan KArate Dojo

What We Teach

Karate for all ages

Shotokan which is taught at the Margaret River Dojo (Training Hall) is based on traditional principles. Our aim is to boost students physical strength and skills and grow their self-confidence. Karate consists of numerous strikes, kicks, defensive blokes and stances. Stances help with proper balance and a strong foundation for preforming these moves. When these basic moves are combined together they form a kata, a set of moves that simulates a student defending him or herself against multiple attacks.

Our initial training comprises explicate detail on how to preform strikes, kicks etc. and how the body mechanics are engaged to get the maximum effectiveness from your moves. Sometimes this can be quite repetitious but practice makes perfect. Students who think they will be putting the gloves on in these early stages might be disappointed. Partner work is encouraged but controlled physical contact is kept to a minimum until the students skills are at a required level.

Students are eventually introduced when they are ready to sport karate (free sparring and kata) and self-defense techniques, all part of the many branches of the Shotokan Karate tree.

Grading’s are usually held at the end of each school term the student’s progress being recognized by gaining a different colored belt. The adult belt system is shown below.
